Zilok – Make Money By Renting Your Stuff

ss-zilok

Most of us have a lot of items lying around that we hardly ever use. Instead of letting them collect dust, we can earn some money with them on Zilok. Zilok is an online rental marketplace. The company started in France and has since spread to the US, UK and a number of other countries, with several cities listed in each.

Like Craigslist, Zilok has lists of items in dozens of categories and subcategories. You can sort these items in a number of ways to find those that are most useful to you. For example, if you want to rent a designer dress for the evening, you can use the map to find someone with the item you need only a few miles away. Zilok is also similar to eBay in the way you can manage your items and your relationships on the site. Feedback and ratings are particularly useful so you can find out if it is a good idea to rent an item to or from someone.

To use the site, you list the items you plan to rent, then get notification when someone is interested in an item. Then you set up your own rental contract for the item. You can say how much you want to rent it for, when it is available and you can also collect a Paypal deposit as a guarantee. Once buyers and sellers have agreed on a rental, they can link up by email to fine tune the details. This is a great way to get any item you need in a hurry but may not want to buy.

Practical Uses:

  • Rent a power tool for that specialist DIY job
  • Get a designer outfit for a special occasion without having to pay full price
  • Find out if you are really interested in playing the violin by renting one before you commit to a purchase
  • Offset the cost of your expensive GPS by renting it out when it is not in use

Insider Tips:

  • Use the tag search as an alternative to the category search
  • Sign up for pro features if you are in the rental business to create an additional way to reach customers
  • Ask for a security deposit when renting to protect yourself against damage to the item
  • Don’t limit yourself to local searches; many items can be shipped

What we liked:

  • The site is easy to navigate with attractive category menus
  • The rating system makes it easy to know who is most trustworthy
  • You can sort your search by the features most important to you
  • There is a simple one page form where you can create an item for rent

What we didn’t like:

  • It was difficult to find the tag search
