LikeOurselves – Social Planning for the Future

LikeOurselves is a location-based social networking application that sets itself apart from the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla by focusing on where people are going later rather than where they’re at right now. Using LikeOurselves, groups of friends and likeminded people can figure out where to meet up later in the evening. The web-app also makes it possible for people to chat online before meeting up in person.

Enter your email address to get signed up for LikeOurselves, then start joining groups that have formed in your local area. Click on any group name to view the tags and current members before deciding whether or not to join. Select the groups you’d like to become a part of – whether that’s Students, Techies, or anything else – and enter the name of the city where you live. Immediately, you’ll see a map and a list of the places where your groups are meeting up later in the day. Click on a location to get a preview of the event, letting you see who’s there now and who’s planning on coming by later. Everyone who’s planning on going has access to a group chat room, where you can find out more about what to expect. You can also communicate with individual people by clicking on the “hi” link next to their photo and username. When you arrive at the predetermined destination, check in with LikeOurselves and change your status from “Here later” to “Here now.” Your fellow group members will see that you’ve arrived, and you’ll hopefully be off to the start of a fun evening with a new group of likeminded people.

Whether you’re looking to meet fellow expats in London, hang out with friends from school in Los Angeles, or get connected with likeminded career people in New York, there’s no limit to the number of ways that individuals, groups, and even some businesses can make use of an app like LikeOurselves.

Practical Uses:

  • Make new friends when living in a foreign country
  • Plan weekend outings with your coworkers and clients
  • See what the other students in your class are planning on doing this weekend
  • Meet up with people who share similar interests as yourself

Insider Tips:

  • Putting up a photo on your profile is completely optional
  • Users won’t know that you’ve virtually said “hi” until they’ve said “hi” as well
  • See how many people are at all locations within 20 miles of your current spot
  • Use the tags to find interesting groups and let people know more about your interests

What we liked:

  • Groups that use LikeOurselves will have an easier time planning outings
  • LikeOurselves seems like a great way for people in foreign locales to make new friends
  • Ability to see who has already arrived at an event before making your entrance
  • Chat room conversations are an excellent way to get more information about an event – such as what to wear or what to expect – before arriving in person

What we didn’t like:

  • LikeOurselves has temporarily removed its iPhone and Android app links, making it difficult to check in at various locations and get full use out of the site
  • Because LikeOurselves is still relatively new, there are few upcoming events in most U.S. cities
