Guzzle – Web Dashboard, Customized to Your Style

Forget those template-style start pages that people used to use in year’s past. With overwrought designs and overloaded information streams, these traditional start pages were oftentimes too cluttered with miscellaneous information to ever work effectively. Not anymore. Guzzle is a new application that lets people create their own fully-personalized web browser dashboards that include links to stories about all the topics that interest them most.

Getting your Guzzle dashboard set up is a three-step process. First, choose the topics that you want to read about the most—such as social media, Facebook, fashion, or the iPhone. Second, arrange those topics and determine their order on your start page screen. Automatically generated topics like latest images and headlines can be included in your start page or deleted if you wish. Finally, pick your display options. Articles can show the headline and source, or just the headline by itself, and you can decide whether to put a navigation bar at the top of your page or not. Within an instant, your page has been created. To save your new page, go ahead and create an account with Guzzle and set the site as your start page on each of the web browsers you use.

As new articles come in, your dashboard will be continually updated similar to an RSS feed. Check out excerpts of the stories listed on your start page at any time by scrolling over them, before deciding whether anything in particular is worth reading in full. Because Guzzle’s feeds search approved news sources only, you can avoid getting sucked in to any off-topic or spam-filled sites. If you enjoy using RSS feeds, but wish the content could be filtered by topic rather than source, then Guzzle is an application that you will probably enjoy.

Practical Uses:

  • Create a better start page
  • Find all of your news in one, centralized spot
  • Track only the topics that matter to you most
  • Be the first to know when there is an update on a topic you’re passionate about

Insider Tips:

  • View articles by headline or image
  • Suggest new news sources to Guzzle
  • Re-organize the page layout to better suit your needs
  • Upcoming iPhone application will let you use Guzzle on the go

What we liked:

  • Easier for people to figure out than standard RSS feeds
  • Users can follow whichever topics they want, rather than just choosing from a list of broad categories
  • Guzzle filters out unsafe websites and news sources before they get to its feeds
  • Deleting certain feeds and adding news ones can be done in an instant

What we didn’t like:

  • Guzzle doesn’t offer the ability to chose your own news sources, only topics, which could limit the application’s usefulness
