Foodical – Track Your Food Consumption

Foodical is a social networking and communications service that lets people send messages about the latest foods they’re eating and track how many calories they consume. Similar to Twitter, Foodical lets users post 140-character messages on the web. The only difference is that these messages are meant to specifically be about what people are eating, including detailed information about where they ate the food and what meal it was for. Posted messages will show up in the newsfeeds of anyone who follows your account, and in a public food stream that can be sorted by meal type or most recent messages.

Create a Foodical account or log in with your Twitter or Facebook information to have your Foodical messages show up on other social networking sites. Because Foodical works so similarly to Twitter, there is really no learning curve to getting started. Just type in any message that answers the question, What are you eating? Click on Advanced Options to include additional details like where the food was eaten, what meal it was for, and include a photo to show off your favorites treats. The site will automatically estimate the number of calories in any meal you post about, giving you an easy way to keep track of your overall consumption over the course of a day or a week.

Check out what other Foodical users are eating and see how your calories compare by following new users on the site. You can also add any message to your “favorite food list,” which is an easy way to keep track of certain dishes you’d like to try or make at home. If you’re looking for a better way to keep yourself accountable for the foods you eat, then Foodical is an interesting application that could help you lose weight, have fun, and make a few new online friends at the same time.

Practical Uses:

  • Share details about a special meal with your online friends
  • Improve your health and lose weight by tracking the calories you’re eating
  • Read about the tasty foods other people are eating
  • Be held accountable by your followers for the calories you’re consuming

Insider Tips:

  • Include information about everything you ate to get an accurate calorie estimate
  • Link up with your Twitter or Facebook accounts to post Foodical messages on those sites
  • Include a photo with any Foodical posting
  • Download the iPhone app to update your information when you’re not at home

What we liked:

  • Foodical automatically calculates the calories for you
  • Friends on Facebook and Twitter can still see your Foodical messages even without signing up for the site themselves
  • Ability to comment on other users’ Foodical posts
  • Browsing and sorting capabilities allow you to see what other people have been eating

What we didn’t like:

  • Users must post about every single thing they eat in order to get an accurate assessment of their total calorie consumption each day
  • Foodical can only estimate the calories in a meal, since it has no way of knowing which ingredients or portion sizes were used in the specific dishes you ate

  1. This is absolutely great. I’ve started a diet (well, it’s not actually a diet, I just try to eat less!) and I wanted to know if what I eat, although in smaller quantities, actually has more calories. This website might save my summer, after all!
