GroupMe – Stay In Touch

Tired of sending separate text messages to each person in your family every time you’ve got a piece of important news? What about all the times you’ve had to send separate texts to each member of your soccer team because of a change in the schedule or practice location? Unless you’ve signed up for an unlimited texting plan with your mobile phone provider, those 10-cent messages can add up fast. For frequent texters who need to communicate with large groups of people at once, GroupMe might be the answer.

Essentially, GroupMe is a free group texting service that just about anyone can use. Type in your name and mobile number to start a new group, and GroupMe will send you a new phone number to use when contacting all the members of your team. Add a nickname and cell phone number for each person you’d like to invite to join your group, and you’re ready to start sending and receiving group text messages. The next time you’ve got an important text to send out—such as, if your flight information has changed and you’ll be arriving home for the holidays on a later date—just send a text to your group phone number and let GroupMe handle the delivery. Not only are messages sent to each member of your group, but they are preserved on your GroupMe wall online, too.

To manage your group, just use GroupMe’s easy hash tag commands or login to the website and make changes from any web-connected computer. It’s also worthwhile to know that GroupMe isn’t just a text-messaging tool. The service can also be used to facilitate conference calls for business usage, too. For groups of friends, teammates, business associates, and family members, GroupMe offers a new way of facilitating group communication that is both easy and cheap.

Practical Uses:

  • Let your teammates know when a practice time has changed
  • Get in contact with all your relatives at once
  • Notify your colleagues of changes without making a dozen phone calls
  • Save money by sending fewer text messages each month

Insider Tips:

  • Use GroupMe’s hash tag commands to add new group members from your phone
  • Set up conference calls through the GroupMe site
  • Texts that are “off the record” won’t appear on the group wall
  • Import contacts for a group directly from Gmail

What we liked:

  • GroupMe has created an easier way to communicate with large groups
  • Users can adjust group settings without having to sign onto a computer
  • People can use the service without having an iPhone or Blackberry
  • Texts are saved on a group wall, making it easy to find any messages that were accidentally deleted

What we didn’t like:

  • Groups are capped at 25 members

this tool has changed my life. I find that on a daily basis, it is so much easier to groupme than text. IE – my roommates, why ever talk to them individually? My family. My team at work.

    AMAZING product.
